Ivo Monti

PROFILE

In 1976 Sergio Monti produced the first barrique of Cantina Monti’s wine, pressing it with an hand handled hopper and destemming it by hand on a chicken grid. His passion was born at that moment and it made him the president of Ticino’s and Switzerland’s wine growers, a passion that he also handed down to his sons Delio and Ivo. During the years the winery developed on 4.7 hectars with 9 qualities of vines for 4 labels. It’s located at a 550 meters height with inclinations that do not allow a mechanized production. Cantina Monti focused right away in the production of high quality wines with a low return in vineyard. The “motto” is “respect and rigor”: respect for the wine (processing without pumps, using gravity and without filtering for the red wines) and rigor in thinning bunches in the vineyard. Since several years now the winery is managed by Ivo Monti who follows the philosophy handed him down by his father.

Nel 1976 Sergio Monti produce la prima barrique di vino della Cantina Monti, pigiando con la tramoggia a manovella e diraspando a mano su una ramina da pollaio. Nasce così una passione violenta che lo porta a diventare presidente dei viticoltori ticinesi e svizzeri e che coinvolge anche i figli Delio e Ivo. Nel corso degli anni la cantina si sviluppa su 4,7 ettari con 9 qualità di vitigni per 4 etichette. Situata a 550 Metri di altitudine con pendenze estreme che non permettono la meccanizzazione la Cantina Monti si concentra da subito nella produzione di vini di qualità superiore con bassissime rese in vigna. Il motto è “Rispetto e Rigore”. Rispetto per il vino (si lavora senza pompe per gravità e i rossi non vengono filtrati) e rigore nel diradare i grappoli in vigna. Da diversi anni la cantina è gestita da Ivo Monti che segue la filosofia tramandata dal padre.

PHILOSOPHY

Since the beginning the goal was a higher wine’s quality. Sergio Monti and his son Ivo, both autodidacts, constantly experimented in the cellar and in the vineyard with older and newer techniques published in the sector’s scientific papers. They also red treatises about viticulture and oenology and attended the formation classes at the University of Bordeaux’s oenology faculty. Ivo also attended the inter-professional center of Beaune so that he could understand the secret of their exceptional white wines. The fierce selection in the vineyard is the fundament on which the good results in the cellar are built upon. The less is produced and the older the vineyard becomes, the more will the wine be rich with polyphenols and aromatic substances. This assures a stable product in the long term. The discipline and respect for the harvest are the keys to a good vintage: protecting nature, embracing the methods that make it possible to minimize intervention following the climatic conditions and exclude a series of products that are bad for the environment. This all brings a benefit to the future generations, which wine is all about, also granting an ecologic sustainability. The less the product (first the grapes, than the must and finally the wine) is mechanically mistreated the more the integrity of what nature gave us is guaranteed.

Da sempre il pensiero è rivolto alla qualità superiore. Autodidatti, Sergio Monti e il Figlio Ivo divorano trattati di viticoltura ed enologia, sperimentano in vigna e in cantina antiche e nuove tecniche pubblicate sulle riviste scientifiche del settore e frequentando i corsi di formazione continua della facoltà di enologia all’Università di Bordeaux . Ivo si reca anche al Centro Interprofessionale di Beaune per carpire i segreti dei loro bianchi eccezionali. La feroce selezione in vigna è la base che garantisce un buon risultato in cantina. Meno si produce e più invecchia la vigna, più il vino sarà ricco di polifenoli e sostanze aromatiche, assicurando un prodotto stabile nel tempo. La disciplina ed il rispetto per il raccolto sono la chiave per la riuscita dell’annata.

HISTORY

In 1972 after an accident during a walk in the mountains, following the advice of his doctor, Sergio Monti went back to Cademario, where is family was rooted since 1498. He began doing some outdoor works and bought a pair of scissors to free a little abandoned farm house from brambles. Soon enough the “calling of the earth” had the best of him and so, once he finished fixing the house, he begun to think about the restoration of the vineyard’s rows. In 1976 the first bottle of wine saw the light.
